What Was Reconstruction?
Reconstruction was when the Northern states set conditions that would allow the Southern states back into the Union by having them take an oath of allegiance to the Union. However, the Caucasian men in the Northern states that in support of the African Americans called the Radicals wanted to help out the newly freed African Americans and give them political and civil equality. This event took place took place right after the Civil War from Eighteen Sixty-Five to Eighteen Seventy-Seven. Reconstruction tried to accomplish two different goals. One being to fix the Union and the other was to give the African Americans the right they deserved. Unfortunately, Reconstruction came across serval problems that prevent the Northen States from achieving their goals. The free slaves or freemen were in desperate need of assistance from the North. African American at this time had no education, money, land or farming tools. To make matter worse for African Americans, the Southern states created Black Codes to restrict the rights of freemen. Most Caucasian men in the Southern States refuse to allow African American to be treated as full citizens. Eventually, the Northern along with the Radicals gave up their fight for racial equality and rights for African Americans in Eighteen Seventy-Seven. The Republican government collapsed as the current president Hayes withdraws troops from the South.
